Life is really just a question of reading the signs. For October, IS Fine Art invites seven San Francisco artists creating work focused on reading the signs- physical advertisements, cultural transformations, economic downfalls, internal prophecies & being in the right place at the right time. How do these signs reveal themselves and find clarity? Curated by Steven Vasquez Lopez, the following artists investigate these ideas in the medium of painting, sculpture, and installation:

“I wanted to bring together a show of emerging contemporary artists that are technically masterful in their medium while bringing cultural and political topics to the forefront. Typical of SFAI alum, all artists balance the physical making of their work with important conceptual ideas within language, propaganda, history of objects and bi-cultural identities. You will see the realistic oil painting of public signage, found domestic objects reconstructed into humorous narratives, hard edge painting of familial interiors, hanging fabric flags deconstructing language, a bamboo boxing ring with battling fans and a hybrid sculpture of a wheelbarrow/rocking chair. I’m excited to bring this fresh group of talent to IS Fine Art”

Far out fun in local spaces
The local August Tender Bender Block party was full of food, spirits, friendly faces and live music. Comprised of the following businesses: Clayton Timbrell & Company Inc., Erica Timbrell Design, Hero Shop, Ian Stallings Design, Jane on Larkin, Jay Jeffers, Jeff King & Company, Meraki Market, The Saratoga, Studio BBA, studioHEIMAT, and Sutro Architects, this yearly event occupied the 1000 block of Larkin bring out over 700 party goers. We hosted some dear friends all the way from London, starting out at the Southern Fried Chicken tent all the way to the Chartreuse Cotton Candy stand. The evening popped off with a live band and a meet-and-greet from San Francisco’s 1st African American female mayor. London Nicole Breed is an American politician from California who is the 45th and current mayor of the City and County of San Francisco. The night was capped with some signature cocktails at our friends the historic Saratoga (thesaratogasf.com). We highly recommend the egg white “Free Trade Agreement” and the rum/gin-based “Fog Cutter Fanta” cocktails. If that doesn’t wet your whistle, take a look at the nearly 800-selection-long spirits list deep in bourbon, scotch and rye whiskeys. We look forward to more local events that create community and reinvent spaces.
Art IS Building
Since last December, I have been developing the design and restoration plans for a house that will be used for the Wabash River Valley Artist in Residency Program in Lagro, Indiana. We were excited to discover the house was constructed nearly 50 years earlier than originally thought. There was a massive expansion and addition made to the house in the late 1800s when the steam heat and slate roof were added to the structure. With the help of Ben Bailey of Bailey Construction and Ray Smith’s masonry team the house started coming together quickly this summer. The limestone foundation, front steps, brick repair, twin chimney replacement, painting, and over all restoration project welcomed the 565 registered cyclists coming through Lagro via the Dam to Dam Century Race (visitwabashcounty.com/centuryride/index/2-2/) on September 9th, 2018.
The riders came from all over the nation for the event and hundreds of volunteers worked together to make the event a massive success! I would like to acknowledge the hard work of the enthusiastic team at the Wabash County Visitor Center (visitwabashcounty.com). A special thank you to them and to Parkview for the sponsoring the ride that brought people from all over the nation into this lovely creative community. This is another way guests to the county are able to see the exciting restoration and design projects we are creating.
